Sari Gabay

Sari Gabay is a go-to insurance regulatory lawyer representing insurance agents, brokers and public adjusters in Department of Financial Services’ investigations, complaints, and hearings and in licensing and relicensing applications. She represents sellers and purchasers of insurance agencies and other businesses. Sari also reviews and interprets insurance policies and advises homeowners, venues, and other policyholders in insurance coverage disputes.

Sari stays on top of insurance industry news as a Contributor for the Insurance Advocate magazine and her involvement in CIBGNY, PIA (where she is among its Circle of Consultants), YIP and other insurance trade associations.

Sari also works closely with entrepreneurs and established brands on transactions and litigations. She tailors employment and non-compete agreements, sales and commission agreements, entertainment contracts and commercial leases to meet each client’s needs from retail and e-commerce businesses to insurance brokers,  fashion designers, and restaurant and nightlife businesses.

Sari is seasoned in intellectual property rights, and obtains trademark and copyright registrations and enforces and protects those rights through cease and desist letters, licensing, distributorship and marketing agreements.

Sari litigates civil cases in New York state and federal courts involving infringement, insurance coverage issues, breach of contract, partnership disputes, and non-compete and infringement matters. She also assists with violations from the Department of Consumer Affairs, the Department of Buildings, and other New York City and State agencies.

Prior to 2006, Sari was a Senior Litigator in Proskauer’s Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department where she was on the legal team representing the policyholder, Silverstein Properties, in the property damage and business interruption insurance litigation arising out of the collapse of the Twin Towers. Sari was part of the Trademark and False Advertising Group and the Law Firm Advisory Practice Group. She was involved in the Morale Committee and Summer Associate Committee, always enjoying comradery.

After graduating from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor as an English major and briefly working in publishing for Little, Brown and Company, Sari decided to pursue a career in law and remain passionate about writing. While attending Brooklyn Law School, she volunteered at The Author’s Guild advising writers on copyright law. Sari was Vice President of the Moot Court Honor Society and won the First Place Prize in the National First Amendment Moot Court Competition in Nashville, Tennessee, the Order of Barristers for Excellence in Courtroom Advocacy, the Law & Literature Award and CALI excellence for the future award for her application of literature to legal studies. She also served as Notes and Comments Editor for the Journal of Law & Policy where her article on the patentability of electronic commerce business systems was selected for publication.

Sari is a frequent faculty speaker for Continuing Legal Education courses and motivational seminars for new attorneys. For several years she moderated the Practicing Law Institute’s national seminar on Starting A Law Practice  and has given numerous lectures on law practice management, legal ethics for lawyers, and insurance regulatory issues.

Sari is a native New Yorker from Greenwich Village. In her non-billable time she explores art, culture, travel adventures and enjoys her children. Sari also writes fiction and won an honorable mention in SEAK’s National Fiction Writing Contest for Lawyers.
