Sari Gabay-Rafiy
Sari Gabay-Rafiy concentrates her practice on commercial litigation in New York state and federal courts and insurance regulatory matters before the New York State Insurance Department. She represents corporations and individual property/casualty and life and health insurance agents and brokers in licensing and re-licensing issues as well as in consumer complaints. She represents policyholders in insurance coverage disputes and is experienced in commercial matters involving intellectual property infringement, breach of contract, and general business torts. Sari also advises clients on intellectual property matters, including trademark registrations, cease and desist letters, and domain name disputes.
Prior to co-founding Gabay-Rafiy & Bowler LLP, Sari was a litigator at Proskauer Rose LLP where she was on the legal team representing the policyholder, Silverstein Properties, in the property damage and business interruption insurance litigation arising out of the collapse of the Twin Towers. She was also involved in trademark and copyright infringement matters and as part of Proskauer’s Law Firm Advisory Practice Group, she represented law firms and individuals in employment litigation and ethical matters.
Sari received her Juris Doctor from Brooklyn Law School, cum laude, and received her Bachelor of Arts in English, cum laude, from the University of Michigan. While in law school, she served as Vice President of the Moot Court Honor Society and won the First Place Prize in the National First Amendment Moot Court Competition, the Order of Barristers for Excellence in Courtroom Advocacy, the Law & Literature Award and CALI excellence for the future award for her application of literature to legal studies. She also served as Notes and Comments Editor for the Journal of Law & Policy where she published a Note on the patentability of electronic commerce business systems.
Sari is admitted to practice in the State of New York, as well as the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York and the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. She is a member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the Council of Insurance Brokers of Greater New York, and Professional Insurance Agents, where she is among its Circle of Consultants. Sari is a Contributor for the Insurance Advocate, a bi-weekly publication in the insurance industry.
Sari has lectured at Continuing Legal Education seminars on topics related to legal ethics and professional responsibility. She has authored articles in her fields of interest and also writes fiction. In 2006 she received an honorable mention in SEAK’s National Fiction Writing Contest for Lawyers. As a Trustee of the Board of the Jewish Community Project in Tribeca, she is involved in leadership roles in her community.
In addition to her legal career, Sari has experience in publishing through her work at The Author’s Guild, Inc., a not-for-profit organization that advocates for writers, and Little, Brown and Company, a publishing house.
